Denture Relines

Denture Relines Alvin Smile

Typically, new dentures will fit you securely because they’ve been designed and fabricated specifically for your gums. In time, your gum tissues will change, altering the fit of the denture and making them looser and prone to movement inside your mouth. By having your denture relined by a professional every one to two years will keep it secure and functional.

Hard Reline

Full dentures are required to have a biannual hard relines. At Alvin Smiles, we remove a plastic layer from the denture’s interior surface. We then fill the denture with a putty-like material that molds itself to the contours of your mouth to create an accurate impression. The denture is then sent to the lab to be adjusted to the new shape of your gum tissue. The result is the denture and your mouth making maximum contact.

Soft Reline

Some patients with tender gums or sore spots are unable to wear ordinary dentures. At Alvin Smiles, we may recommend relining the denture with material that will remain pliable for up to two years before needing a replacement. Being softer, this material is less likely to give the patient sore spots as opposed to the standard hard reline acrylic. If you’re experiencing these problems, we encourage you to consider a more permanent solution like implant retained dentures.

Temporary Relines

Not servicing your dentures in a considerable amount of time may result in your gums becoming red, swollen, or misshapen. This makes it difficult to take impressions for a new hard or soft reline. Imprecise impressions may lead to a denture that would perpetuate this problem.

To allow the inflammation to subside, we recommend a temporary, or palliative (medicated) reline material. This reline will allow the denture to fit more tightly with its pliable and soft nature. The gums have a tendency to return to their normal state after a few weeks. At this point, the patient is ready for their new denture or hard reline.
