Root Canal

What is a Root Canal?

Over 14 million root canals are performed each year; it is one of the most common dental procedures. While it is a simple procedure, it can conserve your natural teeth and save you the hassle of dental implants or bridges.

At the center of your tooth is a collection of blood vessels that help build the surrounding tooth. This is called the pulp. Infected pulp may be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks, chips, or even repeated dental procedures. Some symptoms of infection are visible injury, swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature, or pain in the tooth and gums.

How is a root canal performed?

If you identify any of these symptoms, your dentist will probably recommend non-surgical treatment to remove the diseased pulp, then clean and seal the root canal system. This kind of therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or two sessions, depending on the severity of your case.  We also provide nitrous oxide analgesia if necessary. These treatments are 90% successful. You’ll be able to drive home after the treatment. If your tooth appears to be damaged beyond treatment, you will be informed at the consultation.

What happens after treatment?

After your root canal therapy, a record of your treatment is sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact them for a follow-up restoration a few weeks after treatment. Your restorative dentist will decide what’s the necessary course of action to protect your tooth. Rarely does an endodontic patient experience complications after microsurgery. If any problem should arise, however, contact us immediately.

How much will it cost?

The cost of this procedure can vary depending on the severity of the affected tooth. That being said, endodontic treatment is generally much less expensive than tooth removal or replacement with an artificial tooth.
